New Medical Advancement Helps Dentists Treat Bacterial Infections

Researchers at the University of Bristol have developed a new, more effective way, to prevent and fight off bacterial infections. Studies show that 1 in 7 dental fillings fail and 86% of that number is due to bacterial infections. With a new antibacterial solution called Pertinax, dentists will soon have the means of greatly increasing the effectiveness and durability of many dental procedures.

Pertinax, developed by Dr. Michele Barbour and her research team at the University of Bristol School of Oral and Dental Sciences, is an advancement in the formula for chorhexidine. Chlorhexidine is widely accepted as a proven solution to fight bacterial and fungal infections. The only down side to chlorhexidine is that, while effective, it does not last very long. Pertinax greatly increases the persistence of chlorhexidine, allowing it to fight and prevent infections for weeks, months, or even years!

There are many uses for this new development, however Dr.Barbour and the team have decided to first begin applying their formula to the dental market.

“Research shows that there is a clear need for long-acting antimicrobial products used in fillings and cements for crowns, bridges, and orthodontic braces which will treat and prevent persistent bacterial infections over a much longer timeframe than is currently possible,” said Dr. Barbour.
