Foods That Are Good For Your Teeth

What you eat affects every aspect of your health including your dental health by not only preventing gum disease and tooth decay, but also building healthier gums and teeth. It is important what foods make up the best diet for your teeth. Fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, unsaturated fats and whole grains contribute to good dental health, there are a few “super” foods that may boost your overall dental health.

Your mom is right: strong bones and teeth are built by drinking milk. Calcium is essential during the childhood years and your teens, but that does not mean that its value diminishes once you get your wisdom teeth. According to dental experts, sufficient calcium intake also prevents tooth decay. A study in the Journal of Periodontology indicated that individuals who have a calcium diet of less that 500mg were close to twice than likely to develop gum disease.

One of the most affected part of your mouth as a result of low calcium is your jaw bone. It can result in loose teeth which then causes gum disease.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the recommended daily intake of calcium for women younger than 50, and for men of any age is 1000mg, and women older than 50, 1,200mg. Calcium rich foods include yogurt, milk, cheese, salmon sardines, broccoli and kale.

Eating two servings per day will help you get the recommended daily intake of calcium.

Teeth and Vitamin C

In order to repair connective tissue and help the body fight off infection, the body requires Vitamin C. A study at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that those who do not eat the recommended amount of calcium of 75 to 90 mg per day have a greater likelihood of developing gingivitis that those who do. Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontal disease which results in gums becoming red and inflamed and may also cause bleeding.

One piece of citrus food such as oranges, tangerines, or grapefruit will help you meet the recommended daily amount for Vitamin C.

Teeth and Fruits and Vegetables

A good way to test which fruits and veggies are good for your teeth is to listen for a crunch. Those are the best. The texture is like a detergent on your teeth, getting rid of bacteria that may cause plaque. Furthermore, eating these foods require much more chewing creates more bacteria-neutralizing saliva.

Teeth and Tea

Although tea might stain teeth, a study at the University of Illinois College found that compounds in black tea may suppress or destroy the growth of bacteria in dental plaque, and consequently prevent gum disease and cavities.

Teeth and Water

Drinking plenty of water helps rinse bacteria away and any left over food on your teeth that can cause bacteria and plaque. Tap water is a better option since it contains fluoride.
