Regular dental checkups are vital for maintaining your oral and overall health. The frequency of your visits to Signature Smile General & Cosmetic Dentistry will be customized to meet your individual needs and oral health status.

What Is a Teeth Cleaning?

A professional teeth cleaning at our office is the most effective way to remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing may miss.

In addition to brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing daily, scheduling a cleaning with us at least twice a year allows us to identify and prevent common dental problems, such as tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease. Early detection makes these issues easier and more affordable to treat, reducing the risk of future complications.

Procedure Overview

The steps and order of your teeth cleaning appointment may vary based on your individual needs, but typically follow this general process:
  • First, the hygienist or dentist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth using a scaler or dental pick. Plaque that stays on your teeth too long hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. For larger amounts of tartar, we may use an ultrasonic scaler that uses ultrasonic waves to break up the buildup, making it easier to remove with less scraping.
  • Next, a special polisher and paste will be used to eliminate stains and smooth the surfaces of your teeth. The polisher applies a mildly abrasive paste with a spinning rubber cup, which is similar to toothpaste but thicker.
  • During the cleaning, we will rinse your teeth with a jet of water and suction away excess water and saliva, helping to clear away plaque, tartar, and polishing paste. If necessary, we may dry your teeth with a few puffs of air to get a clearer view of any buildup or surface irregularities.
  • Finally, we will floss your teeth to remove any remaining polishing paste. After your teeth are thoroughly cleaned, we will perform a complete examination of your teeth, gums, tongue, and the rest of your mouth to ensure everything is healthy.
